The Kathmandu Literary Jatra was an annual international literature festival organized by Quixote’s Cove. Its mission is to provide a free and open space for creative expression through art and literature to promote the growth of an informed and thoughtful community. The Jatra believes that mutual understanding and respect between people from diverse cultural and linguistic heritages is a prerequisite to the formation of a cohesive and just society. Our experience with this project suggests this remains a considerable challenge.
The first edition of the festival was held successfully in September 2011. The second edition of the festival was scheduled to be from November 29 to December 2, 2012. The second edition was cancelled three weeks before the scheduled dates due to the unilateral decision of the Festival Chair and organizational partner, the Nepal Economic Forum (NEF), to pull out of the venture because of our unwillingness to compromise on our commitment to maintaining the Jatra as a multilingual literary platform.
At the moment, we are processing the return of the copyright (which was registered by NEF without the artist’s prior consent) of the Jatra’s logo to its artist. Once this process is complete, we hope to revive the Jatra in a smaller but equally meaningful way.
