Histories from Home

At Satori, we are committed to creating platforms for the sharing of stories and the lived experiences of those who have traditionally been marginalized. Through the Histories from Home program we work with different communities to help them tell their own stories and share them with a wider community.

What we do

As part of the Histories from Home program, we run workshops and host exhibitions based on the content produced in them. The workshops introduce participants to different ways of storytelling and the multiple sources of knowledge that exists in any community. The exhibitions help to validate the different mediums and forms of knowledge within their community.

Learning Outcomes

Our Histories from Home program is designed to get participants to recognize the many different sources of knowledge that exists within their communities. In the process, they learn to observe, question, and explore their immediate surroundings by channeling their inherent curiosity. They become better communicators, writers and thinkers, and begin to see themselves as members of a larger community.

Activities

The Histories from Home program is composed of a workshop component that leads into an exhibition. Program activities can be focused to within one classroom or one grade level within a school or can be as expansive as involving multiple schools and organizations within a community. Each workshop is intensive - two to three hours a day over the course of six days that are spread over a two week period. Exhibitions can be as short as a class period or span multiple days, depending on the nature and scale of the workshops they are built upon. Workshop participants are encouraged to actively take part in the preparation of these exhibitions.
